4 Easy Ways to Unclog a Stubborn Toilet That Won’t Drain

Dealing with a clogged toilet is never fun. The good news is that there are a few tricks you can use to help when your toilet won’t flush. The following are four ways to unclog a toilet that refuses to drain.

1. Use a Plunger

It may seem obvious, but a plunger is usually the best way to unclog a toilet. You don’t need anything fancy. If your toilet looks like it’s going to overflow, wait 10 minutes for the water to go back down. Next, insert the plunger directly into the drain opening. Then, push and pull the plunger to create a suction that will hopefully unclog the toilet.

2. Try Dish Soap

If you don’t have a plunger, there are alternatives. One way is to get dish soap from your kitchen. The soap will help lubricate the clogged drain. To use, pour 1/2 cup of dish soap in the drain and try flushing.

3. Add Hot Water

Sometimes, using dish soap won’t work. In this case, using hot water might help. Fill a small bucket with warm water and pour it down your toilet. The pressure from the water should help loosen the clogged debris.

4. Make a Drain Snake With a Wire Hanger

If these methods don’t work, you may have to manually unclog the toilet. This can generally be done with a plumbing snake. However, if you don’t have one on hand, you can always use a wire hanger to unclog the toilet. To do so, unravel the wire hanger until you can straighten it out. Then, take one end and insert it into the drain opening. Move it around until you feel the clogged debris. By doing so, you should be able to loosen the debris and have a working toilet again.
