How to Check for Hidden Leaking Pipes in Your Home

If you have a plumbing leak in your home, it’s critical to find the affected pipe as soon as possible. It can quickly cause major damage, costing you a lot of money and time. Here are some of the telltale signs you have a leaking pipe. FloHawks Plumbing + Septic is a locally owned and operated firm based in Puyallup, WA, that helps people with their plumbing leaks. We’re available 24/7 for when emergencies occur.

Check Your Water Meter

Turn off all the water in your home and then look at the water meter. If the dial is spinning, there’s a major leak somewhere in your plumbing system. If the dial is still, wait two hours and then check it again to see if there’s a slower leak.

Use Food Coloring

If you suspect your toilet is leaking, put a few drops of food coloring in the tank. If you see color in the bowl after 10 minutes, then there’s a leak you need to have repaired.

Check Exterior Spigots

Attach a garden hose to each of your home’s exterior spigots. If water leaks through the connection, replace the spigot’s rubber gasket. If you have an irrigation system, you should have a plumber check it once a year as leaks could cause up to 6,300 gallons of wasted water per month.

Check Inside Your Home

The most common areas for water leaks are in cabinets under water basins. You’ll often find these in your bathroom and kitchen sink area. Look for signs of water damage, mold and foul smells at least once a month. If you catch a leak early, it could save you thousands in repair costs.
